Sorry to be so out of touch! This will be a quick and dirty update – hopefully with some more well thought out and written posts to follow early next week. We do not have Internet access where we are staying – it’s very rustic – so we are at the local library getting in some computer time but I’m trying to do 8 hours of online work in 20-30 minutes (including clearing out a week’s worth of email and spam, updating our address, looking at local ads, applying for a local job, checking in at Facebook, etc.). We arrived safely, albeit rather later and poorer than we hoped. I believe I’ve now spent as much money on the car as we made selling the trailer which is a disappointment and concern. And we are still having some issues with the car dying when idling. But we did finally limp into town (or country rather) and got the Uhaul unloaded (we have come to discover we jettisoned (left behind) some boxes we wish we hadn’t – such as the one with the remote for the DVD player and all our DVDs and my son’s box of Legos, among others). It’s been very hot and dry and it is taking some time to acclimate to the change in temperature, culture and routine.
We have been able to meet some other families doing more or less what we would like to do – raising goats, chickens and bees - and I’m very excited about the wealth of resources as far as advice and local knowledge. We are all anxious to get going but stymied by obstacles (percived and possibly actual) in getting housing up and inhabited. We hope to at least make a start on fencing and barn repairs soon.
I miss connecting with all of you – and appreciate all the messages of support! We made a big leap in undertaking this journey and while we have successfuly completed the move, that was just the first of what will likely be many adventures on our quest!
