We did it. We had a marathon painting session on Saturday, helped by indefatigable neighbors who proved to be much better painters. On Sunday we scrambled to finish pulling or pounding down carpet staples in advance of the floorers’ arrival. They showed up around 9 AM and went straight to work, transforming a stained plywood floor into a beautiful glowing light oak surface. The antique white walls and the light floor, plus a good cleaning and no furniture have changed the dirty dark cluttered cave of a living room into a seemingly expansive open space.
The glowing strip is a metal seam that will allow the floor of the tip out room to fold when the room is tucked in. It was brass or chrome and brass seemed a closer match. We still need to buy and install an L-shaped edge around the rooms with the new floor to finish it. The photo below, of the back bedroom, shows the true color of the floor a bit better. That little hatch used to open into the under the bed storage area which no longer exists.
We still have plenty to do! In addition to the edging I need to paint the kitchen and bathroom, buy and install lights for the back bedroom and find an electrician to fix the bathroom light (the previous owner did tell me that there was no working light in the bathroom – not a problem if you live alone but when you need to close the door it gets dark). I need to make shelves for the pantry (currently just a big open space) which I plan to do today, and find someone who can fix the closet. Some things will have to wait – we have exhausted our funds and also our DIY stamina! We camped out here last night (on air beds we had in storage, borrowed fold out mattresses and a camp cot) and today will begin moving all our belongings and cleaning up the old trailer. It leaves tomorrow for storage!
We have tried out the oven – baked two pizzas – and it works! The kids want to make brownies today and if we get moved in good order I’ve promised we will have some. Then our home will smell good!
